Togouchi is made by Chugoku Jozo, a drinks company in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, that is better known in Japan for sake and shochu. The brand takes its name from Togouchi, a mountain village where the company matures its casks in a disused railway tunnel. The tunnel keeps the temperature and humidity fairly steady all year.
Togouchi began as a blended whisky. Much of the whisky in the blends was imported from abroad, including Scotch and Canadian whisky, and then matured further and bottled in Japan. Buyers should not assume every bottle is whisky distilled in Japan.
The ranges a buyer meets include Premium and Premium Japanese Blended, Kiwami, Single Malt, Peated, and aged expressions labelled 9Y and 15Y. There are also cask finishes, including a Sake Cask Finish, which draws on the company's sake background, and a Beer Cask edition.
