Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Straight Rye takes its name from a nineteenth-century New Orleans figure linked to the Sazerac Coffee House and the early history of the Sazerac cocktail. The brand belongs to the Sazerac Company, and the whiskey is distilled and bottled at its Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky.
It is one of the five whiskeys in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, a set of limited releases that appears each autumn. Thomas H. Handy is the strong sibling of the standard Sazerac Rye: bottled straight from the barrel without being cut with water and without chill filtration, so the strength changes from year to year and is usually well above 60% ABV.
In style it is a fairly young, bold rye, typically around six years old, with spice, dark fruit and caramel from new charred oak. Because it is bottled at full strength, many drinkers add a little water to open it up.
In our catalogue you will find the yearly editions, from the 2010 and 2011 releases through the Antique Collection editions of 2013 to 2025, each listed with its distillation year. Each edition is a separate batch, so tasting notes and strength differ between years, and older editions are mostly found on the secondary market.
