High West was founded in 2006 by David Perkins in Park City, Utah, where it opened a distillery and saloon in the old town. Production later expanded to a larger distillery at Blue Sky Ranch in Wanship, Utah. Since 2016 High West has been owned by Constellation Brands.
High West made its name as a blender as much as a distiller. Many of its whiskeys combine its own spirit with whiskey bought from other American distilleries, and the company is open about the sourcing. Rye is at the heart of the house style.
The ranges a buyer meets include Rendezvous Rye, a blend of older and younger straight ryes, and Double Rye!, a younger, spicier blend of two ryes. Campfire is the unusual one: a blend of bourbon, rye and peated blended malt Scotch whisky, giving a smoky, sweet profile. There is also a Bourbon in the range, sold as American Prairie Bourbon.
