About Isautier

Isautier is a family-run rum distillery at Saint-Pierre on Réunion, the French island in the Indian Ocean, making both traditional molasses rum and cane-juice agricole rum.

Country
France (Réunion)
Region
Réunion
Founded

Owner
Isautier family

Isautier traces its roots to the Isautier brothers, Charles and Louis, who came to Réunion from France in the nineteenth century and set up a distillery near Saint-Pierre in the south of the island. It has stayed in the hands of the same family ever since, which makes it one of the longest-running family rum houses on Réunion.

The distillery works with both raw materials the island offers. Traditional rum is made from molasses, the by-product of Réunion's sugar industry, while agricole rum is distilled from fresh sugar cane juice during the harvest. A buyer will see both side by side in the range, as in the Blanc Traditional and the Blanc Agricole Rhum.

The aged rums are matured in oak on the island, where the warm climate speeds up the exchange between spirit and wood. The range climbs from the Vieux 5 Years Old through the 7 Years Old Rhum Vieux to the 10 Years Old, with the Barrik and the Edition Louis & Charles Rhum Vieux, named after the founding brothers, alongside. Secret de Canne is another cane-based expression in the line-up.

For whisky drinkers curious about rum, Isautier is a useful way to compare molasses and cane-juice spirit from a single producer and a single place.
