Thomson Whisky is a small New Zealand distillery run by the Thomson family, based at Riverhead, north-west of Auckland. It is one of a handful of producers that have brought single malt back to New Zealand after the closure of the country's earlier distilleries.
Its signature is smoke from manuka, the native New Zealand tree, used to dry the malted barley in place of peat. The Manuka Wood Smoke single malt is the release most buyers know. The distillery has also made South Island Peat, using New Zealand peat, and the Full Noise range.
Other releases a buyer may meet include The Heart (or Heart Cut) single malts, single cask bottlings such as Quercus Alba, and a cask selected for The Whisky Exchange. Most bottles are official releases from the distillery.
