Kyrö Distillery Company works in Isokyrö, a small town in western Finland's Ostrobothnia region. The company was started by a group of friends who wanted to make spirits from the rye that is grown widely in the area. It also makes Napue gin, which first brought the distillery wider attention.
The whisky is made entirely from rye, mostly malted, and that grain sets the style: spicy, bready and often a little fruity, quite different from both Scotch malt and American rye. Some batches use smoked malt, which gives the Peat Smoke and Smoke Rye bottlings their character.
The core bottling a buyer meets is Kyrö Malt Rye Whisky, alongside Kyrö Peat Smoke Malt Rye Whisky and aged releases such as the Kyrö 4 Year Old. The Sauna Stories series and numbered single malt rye releases explore different cask finishes, such as apricot brandy, Monbazillac, Vin Santo and PX.
Most Kyrö whisky is bottled by the distillery itself, but independent bottlers have also released it, including That Boutique-y Whisky Company, Drinks by the Dram, The Heart Cut and Berry Bros. & Rudd. Several single casks have also been bottled as retailer exclusives.
