New York Distilling Company opened in Brooklyn in 2011, one of the first distilleries in New York City since Prohibition. It was founded by Allen Katz and Tom Potter, a co-founder of the Brooklyn Brewery. Besides whiskey it is known for its gins.
Rye is the heart of its whiskey programme. Ragtime Rye is the house rye, met here as a Bottled in Bond release and a Double Oak version with extra time in new oak. Jaywalk Rye is made from heirloom rye grown on New York farms and comes as Small Batch, Bonded and Heirloom bottlings.
The style is spicy, grain-forward American rye, matured in new charred oak in the American way. Bottled in Bond releases follow the US rules: at least four years old, from one distilling season, at 50% ABV.
Most bottles are official, but a few single casks have been released independently, including young rye bottlings by That Boutique-y Whisky Company, sold through Master of Malt.
