North of Scotland was a grain distillery at Cambus, near Alloa in central Scotland, in spite of its name. It was set up in the late 1950s by the North of Scotland Distilling Company, a business linked to George Christie, and closed in 1980. It does not operate today, so every bottle on the market comes from old stock.
Like other grain distilleries, it produced spirit in column stills, mainly for blending. Long years in cask have turned the surviving stock into soft, sweet single grain whisky, often with notes of vanilla, coconut and polished wood.
There are no official bottlings. The whisky reaches buyers through independent bottlers, usually at 38 to 50 years old from the early 1970s. Look for Douglas Laing's Xtra Old Particular, Pearls of Scotland from Gordon & Company, Stillwater, Berry's Own, The Clan Denny and Single Malts of Scotland. It also appears in vattings such as The Loch Fyne Living Cask.
