Glenesk stood at Hillside, just north of Montrose by the River North Esk. It had a long and changing life, working under several names including Highland Esk, North Esk and Hillside before it settled on Glenesk.
The distillery was part of the Distillers Company group for its later years and stopped distilling in the mid-1980s. Its malting floors carried on as a large commercial maltings, which is why one bottling marks the 25th anniversary of the Glenesk Maltings.
Official bottlings were few, mainly young single malts such as the Glenesk 5 Year Old and 12 Year Old, plus older bottles from the 1970s and 1980s that now turn up at auction. Most of its malt went into blends.
Today buyers meet Glenesk mostly through independent bottlers. Gordon & MacPhail released it in Connoisseurs Choice, Duncan Taylor in Rare Auld and Rare Old, and there are bottlings from Cadenhead, Blackadder and The Vintage Malt Whisky Company. As stocks run down these have become scarce.
