Blanton's was launched in 1984 as one of the first bourbons sold commercially as a single barrel. It is named after Colonel Albert B. Blanton, who ran the Frankfort distillery for decades, and was created by master distiller Elmer T. Lee. The whiskey is distilled at what is now Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, and the brand belongs to Age International.
Each bottle comes from a single barrel, and the label records the barrel number, warehouse and rick, and the date it was dumped. The barrels traditionally come from the metal-clad Warehouse H. The stoppers carry a racehorse and jockey in eight poses, each marked with a letter of the name B-L-A-N-T-O-N-S, and collectors try to gather the full set.
The Original Single Barrel is the standard bottling found in the United States. Gold Edition and the Red Label Single Barrel were made mainly for export markets, with the Red Label aimed at Japan. Straight From the Barrel is bottled at full barrel proof without reduction, so its strength changes from barrel to barrel, which is why you see bottlings listed at different strengths such as 63.8%, 64.6% and 65.1%.
The style is a high-rye bourbon with caramel, vanilla, orange and spice. Demand has outrun supply for years, so prices vary a lot between shops and markets, and comparing them is worthwhile.
