Amahagan comes from Nagahama Distillery, a small distillery on the shore of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, run by the Nagahama Roman Beer brewery. The name is Nagahama spelled backwards.
The whiskies are labelled World Malt or World Blend because they combine Nagahama's own young malt spirit with whiskies imported from abroad. They are blended and bottled at Nagahama, which is common practice in Japan and the reason the labels do not say Japanese whisky in the strict sense.
The numbered World Malt Editions are the core of the range, each with a different cask finish, such as Red Wine Wood, Mizunara Wood and Sherry Wood. Around them come many limited editions and collaborations, including Yamazakura Wood, Mont-Perat, Kabukiza, Koval and a Final Fantasy XIV themed blend.
