Port Charlotte is made at the Bruichladdich distillery on Islay and named after the village a short way along the shore of Loch Indaal. Port Charlotte was once home to its own distillery, Lochindaal, which closed in the late 1920s. Bruichladdich began distilling peated spirit under the Port Charlotte name in 2001, after the distillery reopened under new owners.
In style it sits between Bruichladdich's unpeated Classic Laddie and the extreme Octomore. The barley is peated to around 40 parts per million, giving clear smoke, but the spirit keeps the fruity, malty character of Bruichladdich's tall stills. Like other Bruichladdich whiskies it is bottled on Islay without chill filtration or added colouring.
Early releases came out as the PC series, such as PC11, each a little older than the last. Today the core bottling is the Port Charlotte 10 Year Old, joined by the Islay Barley editions made from barley grown on the island, with vintages like 2013 and 2014 in our catalogue. There are also limited cask bottlings, including single casks for shops and events.
Port Charlotte also appears from independent bottlers, often labelled as Port Charlotte or simply as Bruichladdich. In our catalogue these include Chieftain's single casks and the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, which lists it under its code 127. Bruichladdich is owned by Rémy Cointreau.
