- Mitchell's Glengyle Ltd (J&A Mitchell)
Glengyle was founded in Campbeltown in 1872 and closed in 1925, during the collapse of the town's whisky industry. It was rebuilt by J&A Mitchell, the owners of neighbouring Springbank, and began distilling again in 2004.
The whisky is sold as Kilkerran, because the Glengyle name was already used elsewhere for a blended malt. Malt comes from the Springbank maltings, and the stills came from the closed Ben Wyvis distillery. The spirit is oily and coastal, with a light touch of smoke in the standard malt and a heavily peated version made in smaller runs.
The official range includes Kilkerran 12 Year Old, cask strength releases and Small Batch Heavily Peated bottlings. Like Springbank, Kilkerran is bottled without colouring or chill filtration.
Independent bottlings are uncommon. The main source is Cadenhead's, the bottler owned by the same family company, which releases single casks of Glengyle, often at cask strength.
