Yoichi is the single malt of the Yoichi distillery, on the coast of Hokkaido in northern Japan. Masataka Taketsuru founded it in 1934 after learning the craft in Scotland, and it became the first home of Nikka Whisky. Nikka, now part of Asahi, distills, matures and bottles the whisky in Japan.

The spirit is known for weight and character. The pot stills are still heated directly with coal, a rare practice today, and part of the production uses peated malt. The result is often described as rich, oily, smoky and a little salty, shaped by the cold sea air of the site.

The current core release is Yoichi Single Malt, which carries no age statement. Nikka dropped most age-statement bottlings in 2015, so older releases such as the Yoichi 10 Years, the 20 Year Old and vintages like 1990 are now sought after on the secondary market.

Buyers will also meet the distillery's Key Malt style bottlings, named Peaty & Salty, Sherry & Sweet and Woody & Vanillic. These sit alongside wood finishes from 2018 (Manzanilla and Bourbon Wood) and limited editions such as the 2019 release.
