Westward Whiskey is made in Portland, Oregon, not Tennessee. It grew out of House Spirits Distillery, founded by Christian Krogstad in the early 2000s, and is one of the best-known names in the American single malt movement.
The approach borrows from Pacific Northwest brewing: the wash is made from two-row barley malted for pale ale and fermented with ale yeast, then double distilled in pot stills. The spirit is matured in new, lightly charred American oak, which gives a rich, sweet and malty style.
The core is Westward Single Malt, alongside cask strength releases and finishes such as Stout Cask and Pinot Noir Cask, the latter a nod to Oregon wine. Some bottlings here were made for retailers.
Westward is mostly bottled by the distillery, but independent bottlings exist, such as single casks from The Heart Cut.
