Mosstowie is not a separate distillery but a malt whisky made at Miltonduff, near Elgin in Speyside. In 1964 the owners installed a pair of Lomond stills at Miltonduff, a type of pot still with adjustable plates in the neck, and the spirit from them was given its own name, Mosstowie. The Lomond stills were removed in 1981, so no new Mosstowie has been made since.
The Lomond stills were designed to let a distillery make different styles of spirit from the same equipment. Mosstowie is usually described as a fairly light, fruity Speyside malt, though with so few casks left, bottlings vary a lot with age and cask.
Official bottlings were very rare, and most Mosstowie reaches buyers through independent bottlers. In our catalogue you will find Gordon & MacPhail's Connoisseurs Choice bottlings from the 1975 and 1979 vintages, an older Sestante 17 year old, and long-aged cask strength bottlings from Signatory, including 37 and 38 year olds from 1979 and a 45 year old from 1973 for Signatory's 30th anniversary. All are collector's bottles from a closed production.
