Pittyvaich stood in Dufftown, in the heart of Speyside, right beside Dufftown distillery. It was built in 1974 by Arthur Bell & Sons to supply malt whisky for the Bell's blends, and it later passed to the group that became Diageo.
Its life was short. Production stopped in 1993 and the buildings were demolished in the early 2000s, so no more Pittyvaich will ever be made. Almost all of its spirit went into blends during its working years, which is why official single malts were always scarce.
The best known official bottling was the 12 Year Old in the Flora and Fauna series. More recently Diageo released aged Pittyvaich in its annual Special Releases, including the 25 Year Old 1989 (2015), the 28 Year Old 1989 (2018), a 29 Year Old (2019) and a 30 Year Old (2020). These are often described as a richer, fruitier style than the distillery's old reputation suggested.
Independent bottlers also offer the occasional cask: Hunter Laing in its Old & Rare Platinum range, Cadenhead with a 1977 single cask, Gordon & MacPhail's Connoisseurs Choice and others. With stocks shrinking, prices for old Pittyvaich tend to rise over time.
