Scallywag is not a distillery but a brand. It is a blended malt, meaning a vatting of single malts from several Speyside distilleries with no grain whisky, created by the family firm Douglas Laing & Co of Glasgow. The distilleries used are not named on the label.
The name and the dog on the label come from the Laing family's fox terriers. Scallywag sits in Douglas Laing's Remarkable Regional Malts series, alongside other regional blended malts such as Big Peat from Islay and Timorous Beastie from the Highlands.
The style leans towards sweet, fruity Speyside whisky with a strong influence from sherry casks. Douglas Laing typically bottles it without chill filtration or added colouring. The core Scallywag is joined by aged versions such as the 13 Year Old, small batch releases at 10 years and more, and a cask strength edition.
There are also frequent limited editions, for example Scallywag Noir, an Easter edition finished in orange wine casks for the Dutch retailer Gall & Gall, and special labels for events. These come and go quickly, so prices can vary between shops.
