Ichiro Akuto comes from a family of sake and spirits makers whose Hanyu distillery closed in 2000. He saved much of the remaining Hanyu stock, founded his company Venture Whisky in 2004 and opened Chichibu distillery in Saitama Prefecture in 2008.
The Hanyu stock became the source of the famous Card Series, single casks each labelled with a playing card, such as the Three of Hearts and Four of Spades from 2000 bottled in 2010. These are now sought after by collectors and command high prices.
The everyday range is built from blends. Ichiro's Malt & Grain, including the White Label and the Classical and Limited Editions, is a world blended whisky that combines whiskies from several countries with Japanese whisky. The Double Distilleries blended malt marries Hanyu and Chichibu, and the Mizunara Wood Reserve and Wine Wood Reserve are blended malts given their character by Japanese oak and wine casks.
Occasional collaborations also appear, such as the Double Distilleries 2021 that pairs Chichibu with Komagatake, the malt from Mars Shinshu.
