Hibiki was launched by Suntory in 1989, the company's 90th anniversary year. The name means "resonance" or "harmony", and the blend is presented in a distinctive bottle with 24 facets, a nod to the 24 seasons of the old Japanese calendar.
Suntory blends Hibiki from its own whiskies: malt from the Yamazaki and Hakushu distilleries and grain whisky from Chita. Part of the blend is aged in Japanese mizunara oak, which adds a sandalwood and incense note. The style is soft, rounded and elegant rather than heavy or smoky.
The range most buyers meet is Japanese Harmony, a no-age-statement blend, along with variants such as Japanese Harmony Master's Select and Blossom Harmony. The aged expressions, the 17, 21 and 30 Year Old, are much harder to find; the 17 Year Old was withdrawn in 2018 because of stock shortages, so bottles now trade at collector prices.
Limited releases, including the Kacho Fugetsu and Hiroshi Senju artist bottlings, the 100th Anniversary edition of Japanese Harmony and older pieces like Millennium 2000, are aimed mainly at collectors.
