Wild Turkey is distilled at the Wild Turkey distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, above the Kentucky River, and is owned by the Campari Group. Its name is said to come from bourbon taken along on a wild turkey hunt in the 1940s. The whiskey has long been shaped by the Russell family, with Jimmy Russell and his son Eddie Russell as master distillers.
The house style is rich and spicy. Wild Turkey is known for distilling and filling its barrels at relatively low strengths and for using heavily charred new oak, so less water goes into the bottle and the whiskey keeps a full body.
The best known bottle is the 101 Bourbon Whiskey, bottled at 101 proof (50.5% ABV), with the 81 Proof Bourbon Whiskey as a lighter option and older age statements such as the 8 and 12 year old in some markets. Rare Breed is a barrel-proof blend of ages, and Longbranch, created with Matthew McConaughey, is filtered through mesquite and oak charcoal. Rye drinkers will find the Straight Rye Whiskey and 101 Rye.
Master's Keep is a series of limited, older releases such as Decades and One. Collectors also meet occasional special packages, such as the 101 in a Wedgwood decanter.
