Stauning was started in 2005 by a group of friends near the village of Stauning in West Jutland, Denmark. What began as a small hobby distillery has grown into one of the best-known whisky makers in Scandinavia, with a larger distillery opened in 2018.
The distillery grows close ties with local farmers and malts its barley and rye on its own malting floors. For its peated spirit it smokes the malt with local peat and heather. Distillation takes place in small, direct-fired copper pot stills, which gives a robust, characterful spirit.
Rye is the house speciality. A buyer will meet the core Rye along with cask variations such as Rum Cask Finish, Sweet Wine Casks, Sherry Cask and the Douro Dreams releases from port casks. Bastard is a rye finished in mezcal casks, and KAOS combines rye and malt whiskies.
For malt lovers there are Peat and Smoke, made from smoked barley. Special releases such as the Design Edition and an advent calendar appear from time to time. Stauning is almost always bottled by the distillery itself.
