John Walker & Sons traces its roots to John Walker, who ran a grocer's shop in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, from 1820 and began selling whisky there. His son and grandsons built the business into a blending house, and the striding man and square bottle became familiar around the world. Today the company is part of Diageo.
Johnnie Walker whiskies are blends of malt and grain whisky drawn from the many distilleries in the Diageo group, with malts such as Cardhu, Caol Ila and Talisker often linked to the house style. The blending and bottling are carried out by Diageo in Scotland rather than at any single distillery.
The ranges a buyer meets most often are Red Label, the brand's entry blend made for mixing, and the 12 years Black Label, a rounded blend with a touch of smoke. Double Black is a smokier, darker take on Black Label. At the top sits Blue Label, a premium blend, with limited editions such as Blue Label Elusive Umami.
