Elements of Islay is a range of Islay whiskies created by Speciality Drinks, the bottling arm linked to the London retailer The Whisky Exchange. Each bottling carries a short code inspired by the periodic table: Cl for Caol Ila, Lp for Laphroaig, Lg for Lagavulin, Ar for Ardbeg, Bn for Bunnahabhain and Oc for Octomore from Bruichladdich, followed by a batch number. So Cl12 is the twelfth Caol Ila batch, not a 12 year old.
As an independent bottler it does not distil; it selects casks of whisky from the island's distilleries and bottles them in small batches, usually as vattings of several casks rather than single casks. The bottlings typically carry no age statement and are generally released at cask strength, in distinctive 50cl bottles.
The series has covered most of Islay, from the heavy peat of Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg and Octomore to the gentler Bunnahabhain. Batches are limited, so each code is a distinct release and individual batches can differ noticeably. Blended releases have also appeared alongside the distillery codes.
