Glenkinchie sits in farmland near Pencaitland in East Lothian, about fifteen miles from Edinburgh. It dates from the 1830s and is one of the few working malt distilleries in the Lowlands. Today it is owned by Diageo, and it was chosen as the Lowland member of the company's Classic Malts.
The spirit is unpeated and light in style, often described as grassy, floral and gently sweet. The distillery is known for a very large wash still and for condensing its spirit in a worm tub, an older method that sits a little against the light house character and adds some weight.
The core bottling is the 12 Year Old, joined by the Distillers Edition, which is finished in Amontillado sherry casks and carries a vintage and bottling year. Diageo has also released older expressions through its Special Releases, such as the 20 Year Old bottlings of 2007 and 2010, and a 16 Year Old in the Four Corners of Scotland Collection linked to Johnnie Walker, whose Lowland home the distillery became.
Most Glenkinchie comes from the owner, and independent bottlings are relatively uncommon. They do appear from time to time, for example from Malts of Scotland, Edinburgh Whisky Ltd and in series such as The Cooper's Choice and Provenance, sometimes labelled simply as a Lowland single malt.
