Kilbeggan takes its name from the town in County Westmeath where a distillery was licensed in 1757. The distillery closed in the 1950s. Cooley Distillery later took over the name and restarted distilling there in 2007. The brand is now owned by Suntory Global Spirits, formerly Beam Suntory.
Most of the whiskey in a bottle of Kilbeggan comes from the Cooley Distillery in County Louth. The small Kilbeggan distillery in the town makes some spirit of its own, including rye-based whiskey.
The core Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey is a light, easygoing blend of malt and grain. Kilbeggan Black adds a gentle touch of peat. The Single Grain is a soft, sweet whiskey from grain spirit. The Rye mixes rye with malted and unmalted barley, an old Irish style revived at the Kilbeggan distillery itself.
Older bottlings such as the 15 Year Old and 21 Year Old appear less often and cost more. The everyday blend is one of the more affordable Irish whiskeys on the market.
