Millburn stood on the eastern edge of Inverness, and its history is usually traced to the early nineteenth century. For most of the twentieth century it belonged to the Distillers Company, which supplied its malt to blends.

The distillery closed in 1985, during a wave of closures across the Scotch whisky industry, and it will not reopen. Its equipment was removed and the buildings were later turned into a hotel and restaurant. Every bottle of Millburn on the market is therefore old stock, and prices reflect that.

Official bottlings were rare. The best known are the Rare Malts releases, such as the 25 Year Old distilled in 1985 and the 35 Year Old from 1969, bottled at cask strength.

Much of what buyers meet comes from independent bottlers. Gordon & MacPhail released Millburn in its Connoisseurs Choice range, with vintages such as 1971 and 1972, and Douglas Laing bottled it in its Old & Rare Platinum series and for The Whisky Shop. Signatory Vintage has also bottled it. With a closed distillery, the bottler and vintage matter a great deal, so check the label details when comparing prices.
