Mars Whisky belongs to Hombo Shuzo, a family-owned drinks company from Kagoshima in southern Japan best known for shochu. Despite the Scottish country in our data, Mars is a Japanese producer.
Its main distillery is Mars Shinshu, high in the Japanese Alps in Nagano, where the cool climate means slow maturation. A second distillery, Mars Tsunuki, opened in Kagoshima in 2016, where the warm climate works much faster. Mars mostly bottles whisky from its own distilleries rather than buying casks from others.
Komagatake is the single malt from Shinshu, released in yearly editions and in finishes such as an IPA cask. Tsunuki Aging tracks the young Tsunuki malt as it matures. Maltage Cosmo is a blended malt, with editions like a Manzanilla cask finish, and Mars Malt Duo pairs Tsunuki malt with malt from Akkeshi in Hokkaido. Kasei and The Y.A. complete the range.
