Deanston

Deanston sits by the River Teith near Doune, on the southern edge of the Highlands. The building began life as an 18th century cotton mill and was converted into a distillery in the mid 1960s. It belongs to Burn Stewart Distillers, which also runs Bunnahabhain and Tobermory.

The distillery still generates its own power from the river with a hydro-electric turbine. Its spirit is made mostly from unpeated malt and has a soft, waxy, honeyed and fruity character. Deanston has also made organic spirit from organic barley.

The official range, including the 12, 18 and 20 Year Old, is bottled at 46.3% without chill filtration and with natural colour. Alongside them come cask experiments such as New Virgin Oak, Calvados and orange wine casks, and a stout cask finish. Older bottles from the 1980s and 1990s, among them Old Bannockburn, appear on the secondary market.
