About Angostura

Angostura traces its roots to Dr. Johann Siegert, a German surgeon who developed his aromatic bitters in 1824 in the town of Angostura, Venezuela, from which the name comes. The business later moved to Trinidad, where the House of Angostura is still based in Port of Spain.

The company is best known worldwide for Angostura aromatic bitters, sold in the small bottle with the oversized paper label, and for flavoured versions such as Orange and Cocoa bitters. The Dr. Siegert name also appears on its products in honour of the founder.

Angostura also distills rum in Trinidad, and much of what a buyer meets here is aged rum rather than whisky: the 7 Years Old, 1919, 1824 and the 1787 15 Years Old. These are column-distilled Trinidad rums aged in ex-bourbon casks.

One listing in our catalogue describes a single malt Scotch under the 1824 name; Angostura is a rum and bitters producer, so check the details of that bottle with the retailer before buying.
