New Riff Distilling sits in Newport, Kentucky, just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. It was founded by Ken Lewis, who previously ran the drinks retailer The Party Source, and it began distilling in 2014. It is a family-run independent rather than part of a large group.
The distillery draws water from a gravel aquifer beneath its site. Its bourbon uses a high-rye mash bill and a sour mash process, and its core whiskeys are bottled in bond, meaning at least four years old and bottled at 50% ABV. New Riff is also known for skipping chill filtration.
The main ranges a buyer meets are the Straight Bourbon and the Bottled In Bond Kentucky Straight Rye, alongside Single Barrel Bourbon and Single Barrel Rye bottled at cask strength. Beyond these sit grain experiments such as Straight Malted Rye and Straight Balboa Rye, made from an heirloom rye variety, plus a Kentucky single malt, a Sherry Finish Malted Rye and the seasonal Winter Whiskey.
New Riff whiskey is bottled almost entirely by the distillery itself, so most bottles you find are official releases, including store picks of single barrels.
