Kavalan is the single malt of the Kavalan distillery in Yilan County, in north-eastern Taiwan, built by the King Car Group and opened in 2005. Its first whisky was released in 2008, and within a few years it had earned a place alongside the established whisky countries.
The distillery sits on the plain between the mountains and the sea, and its warm, humid subtropical climate makes the spirit interact with the wood much faster than in Scotland. Whiskies gain colour and cask character quickly, but lose more to evaporation, so Kavalan usually bottles without age statements. The house style is fruity and rich, with tropical fruit and strong cask influence.
The entry level includes the Kavalan Single Malt and Distillery Select, while Concertmaster is finished in port casks. Many drinkers know Kavalan for sherry cask whiskies, including the popular Sherry Oak style.
The Solist series is the range collectors follow most. These are single casks bottled at cask strength, each from one cask type: ex-bourbon, sherry styles such as Manzanilla and Amontillado, port, brandy, wine barriques (Vinho Barrique) and peated casks. Strengths are high and vary from cask to cask. Kavalan is almost always sold as an official bottling.
