Royal Salute was launched by Chivas Brothers in 1953 to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Its name refers to the 21-gun salute, and from the start the blend has carried a minimum age of 21 years. Today the brand belongs to Pernod Ricard through Chivas Brothers.
Royal Salute is not a distillery but a blend, drawing on malt and grain whiskies from the Chivas Brothers estate, with Strathisla traditionally named as an important malt in it. The blending and bottling are done by Chivas Brothers in Scotland. The house style is rich and rounded, as you would expect from long-aged blended Scotch.
The classic presentation is a coloured porcelain flagon. The core is the 21 Year Old, which also appears in variations such as The Malts Blend (a blended malt), The Blended Grain, and limited Fashion Collection editions designed with Richard Quinn and Harris Reed.
Above that sit older and finished releases: the 25 Year Old Pedro Ximénez Cask, a 26 Year Old Colheita Port finish, the 30 Year Old Key To The Kingdom, the 32 Year Old Union of the Crowns, the 62 Gun Salute, and very old bottlings such as the 52 Year Old from the Time Series.
