Black Bottle began as a blend created by the Graham family, tea merchants in Aberdeen, in the late 19th century. The name comes from the dark glass bottle it was sold in, which remains part of the brand's look today.
The blend is best known for its smoky side. For many years it was built around malts from Islay, which gave it a peaty, coastal character unusual for a modestly priced blend. Older bottlings, such as the 15 Year Old from the 1980s and the 10 Year Old made for the Islay Jazz Festival 2002, are sought after by collectors for that reason.
Black Bottle is a brand rather than a distillery: it is a blend of malt and grain whiskies from several Scottish distilleries, and it has passed through several owners over its history. Today it is part of the Burn Stewart group of brands.
Most buyers will meet the Standard Blend, the everyday bottling. Alongside it sits the Alchemy Series, small releases that explore different casks and styles, including Double Cask, Smoke & Dagger, Captain's Cask and Island Smoke.
