Blair Athol stands in Pitlochry, Perthshire, and is one of the older working distilleries in Scotland, dating from 1798. It is owned by Diageo and has long been closely linked with Bell's blended whisky, which still takes most of its output. The visitor centre makes it a popular stop in the Highlands.
The distillery draws its water from the Allt Dour burn. It is known for a cloudy wort, which helps give the spirit a nutty, malty and fairly full character that takes well to sherry casks.
Official single malt is relatively scarce, with the Flora & Fauna 12 Year Old the most familiar and occasional distillery-only or special releases. Because of this, much of what buyers see comes from independent bottlers: Old Malt Cask and Xtra Old Particular from the Laing family companies, Signatory Vintage cask strength releases, Berry Bros. & Rudd, That Boutique-y Whisky Company, The Single Cask and others. These are often single casks at varying ages and strengths.
