Glen Albyn stood in Inverness, at the point where the Caledonian Canal reaches the sea. It was founded in 1846 and went through several closures and changes of owner in its long life. From 1972 it belonged to the Distillers Company Limited, which also ran its neighbour Glen Mhor across the canal.
DCL closed Glen Albyn in 1983, during the industry-wide cuts of that time, and the buildings were later demolished. Glen Mhor and Millburn, the other Inverness distilleries, closed in the same year, ending distilling in the town.
During its working life most of its spirit went into blends, and official single malt bottlings were few. A 10 year old from the 1970s and a release in the Rare Malts Selection appear in our catalogue.
Today most Glen Albyn reaches buyers through independent bottlers. Gordon & MacPhail released it in Connoisseurs Choice and in its Private Collection, with ages past 40 years, and Signatory Vintage bottled single casks such as the 1978 cask 697 and the 1981 Cask Strength Collection. As stocks run down, these are collector's bottles.
