Strathisla sits on the River Isla in the town of Keith, in Speyside. It dates back to 1786, when it was known as Milltown, and is often described as one of the oldest operating distilleries in the Highlands. With its twin pagoda roofs and water wheel, it is among the most photographed distilleries in Scotland.
Today it belongs to Chivas Brothers, part of Pernod Ricard, and much of its spirit goes into the Chivas Regal blends. Strathisla works with small stills, and its malt is full, fruity and often takes sherry casks well.
The main official bottling is the 12 Year Old, with occasional releases such as the 15 Year Old Pedro Ximénez Cask Finish, often found at the distillery.
Gordon & MacPhail has a long history with Strathisla, and its Distillery Labels bottlings, including old vintages, are a big part of what buyers meet. Other independent bottlers include Douglas Laing with Old Malt Cask, Ian Macleod with Chieftain's, Signatory Vintage, Duncan Taylor and That Boutique-y Whisky Company.
