About The New Zealand Whisky Company

The New Zealand Whisky Company bottles aged stocks from the closed Willowbank distillery in Dunedin, matured in Oamaru, under names such as Oamaruvian, South Island and Dunedin.

Country
New Zealand
Region
Otago
Founded
2010

The New Zealand Whisky Company is based in Oamaru, on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island. Around 2010 it bought the remaining casks of the Willowbank distillery in Dunedin, which had closed in the 1990s. Those barrels had been left to mature in Oamaru.

The whisky was distilled from the late 1980s into the 1990s, so many bottlings carry ages in the high teens and twenties. Releases from single casks and small batches show the vintage and sometimes the cask number. Examples are the New Zealand 22 Year Old 1992 and the 24 Year Old 1989.

Buyers will meet several range names. The Oamaruvian bottlings include a DoubleWood, and the South Island bottlings are vintage-dated. The Dunedin Double Cask appears in The Whisky Collection. Because the stock comes from a closed distillery, these whiskies are finite.
