Glenglassaugh stands on the coast of the Moray Firth near the village of Portsoy, in the old county of Banffshire. It was founded in 1875. The distillery closed in 1986 and stayed silent until 2008, when new owners restarted production. It later passed to the BenRiach Distillery Company and, in 2016, to Brown-Forman.
The long silence shapes what a buyer meets. Old stock from before 1986 was released as single casks in the Rare Cask Release batches, some at 40 and 50 years old, while new spirit has been bottled young and in small octave casks, as in the Octaves range.
The current core range draws on the seaside setting. Sandend, named after the nearby bay, is a fruity, coastal malt, and Portsoy is a peated expression. Earlier releases included cask finishes such as Portwood.
Independent bottlings exist too, mostly of the older pre-closure spirit. Our catalogue has bottlings from Gordon & MacPhail, Duncan Taylor, Adelphi, A.D. Rattray, The Vintage Malt Whisky Company, The Maltman and Alistair Walker.
